Sermon Notes

The Storms of Life

Paul knows his end is near:
2 Timothy 4:6
"For I am now ready to be offered, and the time of my departure is at hand."

Jesus and his disciples, on the sea of Galilee, encounter a storm:
1st: The Problem
1) A sinking ship
2) A sleeping Savior

Matthew 8:23
"Then he (Jesus) got into the boat and his disciples followed him."

***God's will for your life is not always smooth sailing***

Storms come due to a variety of causes:
1)  Sometimes we blow up our own storms
2)  Some storms God creates Himself
3)  Sometimes God sends us a little storm to keep us from heading into a bigger one
4)  Some storms are Satanic in origin
--->Sometimes Satan kicks up a storm in our life to try to get us off track

Matthew 8:24b
"He was alseep."

2nd: The Prayer
Matthew 8:25
"Lord, save us!  We're going to drown!"

***What you do during a storm reveals who you are and what you are***

"Lord, save us" is the language of faith.
--->Faith is looking at your circumstances through God
"We perish" is the language of fear
--->Fear is looking at God through your circumstances

Matthew 8:26a
"You of little faith, why are you so afraid?"

Remember, God's commandments are God's enablements.
He won't ask you to do something you can't do with His help.

The problem that day was not the storm, the sinking ship, or the sleeping Savior...it was the unbelief in the hearts of the disciples.

3rd:  The Power
Matthew 8:26b
"Then he (Jesus) got up and rebuked the winds and the waves, and it was completely calm."

He calmed that storm.  Sometimes he calms you, His child.  He keeps us safe 'til the storm passes by.
