Leviticus 11:44, “ I am the Lord your God. Set yourselves apart. Be holy, because I am holy…”
Leviticus 20:26, “You must be holy. You must be set apart to me. I am the Lord. I am holy.”
Romans 12:1-2, “…offer up your bodies to him while you are still alive. Your bodies are a holy sacrifice that is pleasing to God. When you offer your bodies to God, you are worshiping him in the right way. Don’t live the way this world lives.Let your way of thinking be completely changed. Then you will be able to test what God wants for you. And you will agree that what he wants is right. His plan is good and pleasing and perfect.”
1 Corinthians 1:2, “…You have been made holy because you belong to Christ Jesus. God has chosen you to be his holy people. He has done the same for all people everywhere who pray to our Lord Jesus Christ. Jesus is their Lord and ours.”
2 Corinthians 7:1, “…Let us make ourselves pure from everything that makes our bodies and spirits impure. Let us be completely holy. We want to honor God.”
1 Thessalonians 4:7, “…God chose us to live pure lives. He wants us to be holy.”
2 Timothy 1:9-10, “God has saved us. He has chosen us to live a holy life. It wasn’t because of anything we have done. It was because of his own purpose and grace. Through Christ Jesus, God gave us this grace even before time began. It has now been made known through the coming of our Savior, Christ Jesus. He has broken the power of death. Because of the good news, he has brought life out into the light. That life never dies.”
1 Peter 1:14-16, “You should obey your Father. You shouldn’t give in to evil desires. They controlled your life when you didn’t know any better. The God who chose you is holy. So, you should be holy in all that you do. It is written, ‘Be holy, because I am holy.’”
The Primary way that you and I keep holy, is to make sure our Personal Lives are Reflecting Jesus.
-
We Keep holy when we assume Practical Actions, like living a God centered life, which is visible in our attitudes, actions and behaviors.
-
We Keep holy when we’re Growing and Maturing in Christ -Progressively, step by step, and day by day. This personal, practical, progressive holiness is one of the reasons why God has saved us.
Ephesians 1:4 “He chose us in Him before the creation of the world to be holy and blameless in His sight.”
Jeremiah 7:9-15 "Will you steal and murder, commit adultery and perjury, burn incense to Baal and follow other gods you have not known, and then come and stand before me in this house, which bears my Name, and say, ‘We are safe to do all these detestable things?’ Has this house, which bears my Name, become a den of thieves to you? But I have been watching! declares the LORD. Go now to the place in Shiloh where I first made a dwelling for my Name, and see what I did to it because of the wickedness of my people Israel. While you were doing all these things, declares the LORD, I spoke to you again and again, but you did not listen; I called you, but you did not answer. Therefore, what I did to Shiloh I will now do to the house that bears my Name, the temple you trust in, the place I gave to you and your ancestors. I will thrust you from my presence, just as I did all your fellow Israelites, the people of Ephraim.”
Pursuing Holiness is not an Option for God’s People.
1 Peter 1:14-16, “As obedient children, do not conform to the evil desires you had when you lived in ignorance. But just as he who called you is holy, so be holy in all you do; for it is written: “Be holy, because I am holy.”
Pursuing Holiness is not the Means to our Salvation.
Pursuing Holiness is not just Rule Keeping.
John 14:15 “If you love me, you will keep my commandments.”
Pursuing Holiness is not the Way of the World
Pursuing Holiness is not about Hiding from the World
Why we must Pursue Holiness:
- Because we Love God John 14:15, “If you love me, you will keep my commandments.”
- To bring Honor to God’s Name Exodus 20:7, “You shall not take the name of the LORD your God in vain, for the LORD will not hold him guiltless who takes his name in vain.”
- Because Holiness is Life in all its Fullness
- Because Holiness Brings God Glory
- Because Holiness is Absolutely Possible 2 Peter 1:3, “By his divine power, God has given us everything we need for living a godly life. We have received all of this by coming to know him, the one who called us to himself by means of his marvelous glory and excellence.” Romans 12:1, “By the mercies of God, you can present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship.”
What Pursuing Holiness Looks Like;
- The Renewal of God’s Image in Us 2 Corinthians 3:18, “So all of us who have had that veil removed can see and reflect the glory of the Lord. And the Lord—who is the Spirit— makes us more and more like him as we are changed into his glorious image.”
- A Life Marked by the ‘Stuff of God’ that we ‘Put On’ - and the ‘Stuff of the world’ that we ‘Take Off’ Colossians 3:5, “So put to death the sinful, earthly things lurking within you. Have nothing to do with sexual immorality, impurity, lust, and evil desires. Don’t be greedy, for a greedy person is an idolater, worshiping the things of this world… now is the time to get rid of anger, rage, malicious behavior, slander, and dirty language. Don’t lie to each other… Since God chose you to be the holy people he loves, you must clothe yourselves with tenderhearted mercy, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience. Make allowance for each other’s faults, and forgive anyone who offends you. Remember, the Lord forgave you,so you must forgive others. Above all, clothe yourselves with love, which binds us all together in perfect harmony.”
- Obedience to God’s Commands 1 John 2:4, “We can talk all day long about our love for God, but if we do not keep his commandments we are liars and the truth is not in us.”
- Looking like Jesus Romans 8:29, “The whole goal of our salvation is that we should be conformed to the image of God’s Son.” Colossians 1:15, “Jesus is the image of the invisible God.” Romans 8:29, “For God knew his people in advance, and he chose them to become like his Son, so that his Son would be the firstborn among many brothers.”
How We Pursue Holiness
- By Wanting it!
- By Working it! Philippians 2:12-13, “…Work hard to show the results of your salvation, obeying God with deep reverence and fear. For God is working in you, giving you the desire and the power to do what pleases him.”
- By Fueling It! John 15:5-8, “Remain in me, and I will remain in you. For a branch cannot produce fruit if it is severed from the vine, and you cannot be fruitful unless you remain in me. “Yes, I am the vine; you are the branches. Those who remain in me, and I in them, will produce much fruit. For apart from me you can do nothing Anyone who does not remain in me is thrown away like a useless branch and withers. Such branches are gathered into a pile to be burned. But if you remain in me and my words remain in you, you may ask for anything you want, and it will be granted! When you produce much fruit, you are my true disciples. This brings great glory to my Father.”
